Reverend John-Michael Lavelle is a native of Hubbard, attending Saint Patrick Elementary School and Hubbard High School. He graduated from Youngstown State University in 1990 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, teaching for five years in area schools. Father Lavelle attended Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Cincinnati and then Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Divinity and a Master’s Degree in Religious Education, both in 1999. Father Lavelle was ordained to the Priesthood on May 27, 2000 and served as Associate Pastor of Saint Mary Parish in Massillon and Saint Christine Parish in Youngstown. In 2003, he was appointed Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Ravenna. From 2005–2011, he served as Pastoral Director of CTNY, the Catholic Television Network of Youngstown. In 2008, he received a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Saint Mary Seminary in Cleveland, with a concentration in Church Stewardship and Parish Revitalization. This January, Father Lavelle was appointed by Bishop George V. Murry, S.J. to the new position of Director of Advancement for the Diocesan Office of Catholic Charities (a role he will continue in conjunction with the pastorate of Mount Carmel). He has served as President of Catholic Charities of Portage County and as a member of the Diocese of Youngstown Catholic Charities Corporation. He has served as an instructor in the Theology Department at Walsh University in Canton and in the Deacon Formation Program for the diocese. He currently serves as Secretary of the Diocese of Youngstown Foundation and as Chairperson of the Diocesan Catechetical Commission. He is also a member of the Diocesan Stewardship Commission. Father Lavelle will begin his appointment as Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish the week of June 18, 2012.
