Rededication of Blessed Virgin Statue from School
Congratulations to the First Communion Class of 2010

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 4-5, 2010
From the Pastor
I begin this weekend’s column with a quotation from the Book of Wisdom, chapter 9, verses 13-14: “Who can know God's counsel, or who can conceive what the Lord intends? For the deliberations of mortals are timid, and unsure are our plans.”
These words remind us that we cannot tell God what to do. His plans are superior to ours. We can think things over, sweat about it, make a decision about something, and still find that God wants things to work out in a way different than what we thought would be best.
Scholars tell us this reading was in the context of King Solomon’s “Prayer for Wisdom” even though this was actually written long after Solomon’s time. Its purpose was to strengthen the faith of those who read it. Yes, we don’t know nearly as much as God knows. True, our plans can be carefully thought out but life might still unfold much differently than we had planned. The author seems to tell us to get used to it. Trust God anyway. One of God’s greatest gifts to us is the fact he wants us to be wise enough to serve Him, not just follow our own designs. As the author Timothy Schehr tells us: “Living in a right relationship with God will make straight the path of life.” This will lead to our true destiny which is eternal life with God.
So, are we wise enough to pray for the wisdom to serve God?
~ Fr. Larry Frient

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 28-29, 2010
From the Pastor
Think about some of the most admirable people in our lives. What do we discover? Chances are, we find that they are among the most humble people. (And don’t we find that life has a way of making us humble if we are lacking in this quality? It will sooner or later! )
We admire humble people because they are either genuinely humble to begin with, or we respect the truth that they have come to terms with the deck of cards life has dealt to them.
Our Readings this weekend certainly have a theme of humility. Consider the First Reading from Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29. Also, ponder the Gospel from Luke 14:1, 7-14.
Once again I found a reflection that seemed especially appropriate. It should assist our efforts to ponder and pray. So, as all of us pray for the grace to be humble, let’s take the time to read the
reflection. I have received permission to reprint an adapted version of it below from the Prayer Path Link of the St. Louis University Center for Liturgy Website.
~ Fr. Larry Frient
Humility
It means “of the earth.”
We come from it, and back to it we go.
Naked we are when we get here;
naked we are when we go.
Nothing stays with us but love.
Then why do we cast off humbleness?
Everything comes from you.
Your love, O Lord, is everything,
the only thing we need.

~ Fr. Larry Frient
Humility.
It means “of the earth.”
We come from it, and back to it we go.
Naked we are when we get here;
naked we are when we go.
Nothing stays with us
but love.
Then why do we cast off humbleness?
Everything comes from you.
Your love, O Lord, is everything,
the only thing
we need.

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 21-22, 2010
From the Pastor
One lesson that is emphasized in this weekend’s Gospel from Luke 13:22-30 can be summarized in just a few words: God warns us not to take our faith for granted.
Even though God wants all of us to be saved, we all need to work at it. We cannot presume that we’ll enter the Kingdom of God. We must personally and sincerely respond to the many ways God invites us to participate with Him in building a better world. And we must realize that the number of people to be saved is ultimately God’s decision, not ours.
Jesus tells us to give Him our heart and mind and soul. Give Him your whole life, one hundred per cent of it. For a person who finds his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for Christ’s sake will find it.
Yes, give Jesus your whole life. Give Him your family. Give Him your children. Give Him your job. Give Him your wealth. Give Him your health. Give Him your intelligence. Give Him all of you. Surrender it all. Jesus told us to go to the poor. He taught us to help the hungry. He implored us to help all those who are needy. Most of all, respond to His love in everything we think, everything we dream, everything we do. By this and by means of His grace we strive to enter the Kingdom of God through the narrow gate.

Feast of the Assumption
August 14-15, 2010
From the Pastor
The Gospel writer named Luke shows us that God is famous for doing extraordinary things in and through ordinary people. The Gospel reading for this weekend reminds us of this. We hear from Luke 1:39-56.
The author Pat McCloskey, O.F.M., tells us that Mary “speaks powerfully to all disciples who find that life’s twists and turns keep challenging their faith.” In appreciating Mary’s example of faith, we realize that this apparently ordinary young lady helps us recognize Jesus in the Scriptures and in the events of our everyday lives.
We celebrate the Assumption of Mary this weekend. This Feast reminds us that Mary’s faith continued to grow until she was taken up in a glorified body when her life on earth concluded. May her prayers bring us to the salvation of Christ and raise us up to eternal life as we persevere through the joys and challenges of our daily lives.

From the Pastor:

From the Pastor
What is your most valuable treasure? This question can be discerned from reflection on this weekend’s Gospel from Luke 12:32-48. Jesus tells us: “For where your treasure is, there also your heart will be.”
The Gospel writer named Luke wanted to keep the followers of Jesus focused on the importance of the present time.
This should enable us to realize that our most important treasures are the everyday opportunities we are given so that we might respond to the love of God.
Our hearts should be set on living responsibly in this spirit of openness to the grace of the present moment.
The scholar Eugene Hensell tells us, “The most prudent approach is to live as if every day is the final one.”
Do we treasure what is most important of all in the eyes of the Lord?

Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
July 31-August 31, 2010
From the Pastor
Today’s Gospel from Luke 12:13-21 features Jesus teaching us to avoid greed in all of its forms. A very important question is raised by God as He asks the rich man who hoarded his goods: “All the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?” True perspective comes only when we realize the truth that everything belongs to God. The Scripture scholar Barbara E. Reid, writing in the July 19-26, 2010 issue of America magazine on p. 31 makes the point so well, reminding us: “even life itself is given to us on loan. In the end the greedy man has no benefit from all he has acquired, and his heirs will be left haggling over it.”
The core of the teaching here is that we must not be oblivious of God or of our fellow human beings. We are accountable to both. May we pray for the grace to be good stewards of that which God loans to us.

From the Pastor
Once again, we express gratitude to the many people who helped with our 77th annual Festival in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Thanks to everyone!
As we look back, we remember that one of the primary reasons the Festival was established at this parish long ago was to call us to be people of faith. As we think about this truth, we remember that one of the best ways we honor Our Lady of Mount Carmel is to live as her Son Jesus lived. This means we forgive. It includes remembering that we belong to God and not to the world. We are to live as people who are meek as the fifth chapter of Matthew’s Gospel teaches. Being “meek” in the true sense of the word doesn’t mean that we are wimps. Rather, it means we are very confident of God’s love and secure in His care. Because of this confidence, we see no need to maliciously destroy others or to harbor resentment against them. Worth pondering! Not just as the Festival is in the rear view mirror, but always!

From the Pastor:

Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
July 17-18, 2010
From the Pastor
If you are visiting us as we celebrate our 77th annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival, know that we are delighted to see you. Come back and see us again very soon!
Our Gospel from Luke 10:38-42 features the story of Mary and Martha. Mary is contemplative. Martha is very active. The story challenges us to balance practical action with contemplation. Achieving such balance is easier said than done. Everyone needs both contemplation and activity.
Let me invite you to ponder today’s Gospel from a contemporary perspective. Isn’t it odd that the very things that are intended to save us time and energy (computers, household appliances, etc.) often impose new burdens upon us. We can become slaves to our machines. We spend all our lives acting like Martha, so overwhelmed with practical duties that we end up intellectually drained and spiritually empty. Do we give ourselves enough time and space in which to think and pray? We need to do so now perhaps more than ever.
As the festival winds down, can we keep this truth in mind?
~Padre Lorenzo Frientello

Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time
July 10-11-, 2010
From the Pastor
How soon the Festival begins! It will last from July 14-18 this year. As we announced earlier, this weekend we rededicate the statue that used to adorn the south wall of the building at 309 North Rhodes Avenue formerly known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. The statue was commissioned by the Mount Carmel Society and inspired many who looked upon it since its dedication soon after the building was dedicated in 1957 through the closing of the school due to exceptionally low enrollment in June of 2007. We are pleased to honor all the people whose lives were touched by the experience of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School on North Rhodes Avenue and we pray for them.
As the Festival draws near, we find it important to reflect on the experience of what it means to be a parishioner. The question has been raised concerning why it is important to register at your parish. It is a very good question.
Registration is the official way we join a parish. Some people mistakenly believe that just because they happen to live near a particular parish, used to go to its school, or come here once in a while they automatically belong. At times young people who have moved away for years mistakenly believe they are still signed up under their parents. The truth is, they need to register at the parish near their current residence. Children are parishioners under their parents only until they turn eighteen.
Please take a moment here to correct any and all misunderstandings.
Membership in a parish involves signing up, formally enrolling yourself at a parish if you are eighteen years old or older. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social, and ministerial activities. It is also a statement that the member wants to share his or her time, talents, and treasures to support the parish.
For years, we have published the fact on the front of the bulletin that you are registered if you currently receive envelopes from this church. If you do not receive envelopes, you are not registered.
Please register as soon as possible at the parish to which you want to commit your time, talents, and treasures. If you wish to register here, one phone call on your part to 330-652-5825 begins the simple registration process.
Registration demonstrates that you belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments and obtaining a Sponsor Certificates.
The Pastor may not sign a Sponsor Certificate stating that you are an active member of the parish if you haven’t taken the time to register and demonstrate your commitment to the parish for a period of time before asking for a Sponsor Certificate.
If you register, the parish knows it can count on you and call on you to assist in its mission. Registration is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish.
Please be sure to share this information with adults you know who may be interested in the life and mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish.
Thank you for your dedication to our parish and may God bless you.
~Father Larry Frient
